Course Description
This training course on Power BI will enable participants to import, transform, analyze, and visualize data from diverse sources to draw powerful insights that can be used for storytelling through data and informing data-driven decision-making.
What is Power BI? – Power BI is an interactive data visualization software product developed by Microsoft with a primary focus on business intelligence. Many online learning platforms including Coursera rate Power BI as the best and most sellable data visualization tool.
In addition to its use for business intelligence, Power BI is immensely popular with data scientists who work with data.
Why Power BI? – Power BI is one the best tool for data analytics and ad-hoc data analysis. Power BI compared to other tools has many advantages and is very simple to use. End users do not need to have technical knowledge and skills to create advanced reports and dashboards.
Course Content
Week 1: Basics of Power BI: The First Professional Report
This module will introduce students to Power BI, explain the interface, and enable them to make a professional-looking Power BI report.
- Installing Power BI
- Importing data from diverse sources
- Creating a basic report using bar charts, pie charts, tables, histograms, maps, etc.
Week 2: Data Analysis, Manipulation and Filtering
This module will teach students how to detect outliers, use sources from the open web, and create maps
- Creating measures and calculated columns
- Filtering data in a report
- Using slicers, dynamic filtering of a report
- Introduction to DAX
Week 3: Using DAX in Power BI
This module will introduce students to Data Analysis Expression (DAX) and cover the most commonly used DAX formulas in Power BI.
- Using DAX to solve complex data problems
- Visualizing cross sections of data
Week 4: Advanced/More Topics in Power BI
This module will teach students how to detect outliers, use sources from the open web, and create maps
- Detect outliers in data by coding dynamic slicers into a report using DAX
- Import Data from web sources (Wikipedia etc.) and create visuals and maps

Certification will be provided on the basis of attendance and class performance.

Raja Rafi Ullah is a Research Fellow at the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE). He holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Cornell University where he majored in Economics & Finance.
